Waikiki Surf: Everything You Need to Know

Bid ‘Aloha’ to Waikiki. The world-famous beach. THE beach in Hawaii. And soon to be your ocean playground. But wait! Did you forget to pack your surfboard? Or your “How to Surf Without Wiping Out” guidebook? Don’t let that get you down. We’re here with an all-you-need-to-know about Waikiki surf inc;luding the best surf spots and where to get all your gear.

Inside Intel on Waikiki Surf

The Surf Spots

  1. Queen’s Surf Break—The Beyoncé of Waikiki

Queen’s is iconic, legendary Waikiki surf, and it knows it. This is the surf spot where longboarders come to glide, smile, and maybe toss in a stylish little cross-step for good measure. Share the waves, flash your best shaka, and let Queen’s remind you why surfing became cool in the first place.

  1. Canoes—For the Newbies and the Nervous

Canoes is the Waikiki surf spot equivalent of a warm hug and a pep talk. The waves here are soft, steady, and basically designed to make you feel like a surf star, even if you’re more “beginner balance class” than “pro athlete.”

This is where you’ll learn to paddle, pop up, and maybe even yell “I’m doing it!” as you ride a wave all the way to shore. Bonus: The break is close enough for your friends to snap pictures from the beach. Instagram glory, here you come.

  1. Pops (Populars)—Where the Longboarders Play

Let’s talk about Pops. We may be biased but this is our personal favorite. It’s a little farther out, which means fewer crowds and more time to channel your inner surf zen. The waves are mellow, long, and built for cruising. If you’re riding a longboard, this is your Disneyland.

Pro tip: Pops is the kind of spot where you bring snacks because once you paddle out, you’re not going to want to leave (nothing wrong with stuffing a granola bar in your suit for later–just make sure to leave no trace in the water when you’re done).

  1. Publics—The “Step It Up” Spot

If you’re feeling brave (or just really good at pretending), paddle over to Publics. The waves here are faster, punchier, and a little more oooh than ahhh. It’s where intermediate surfers come to flex and locals hang to show the ocean who’s boss.

The Essentials: Your Surf Survival Kit for Waikiki

Before you paddle out, make sure you’ve got the goods.

  • A Board: Rent one from a local shop like Big Wave Dave Surf Co. They’ve got everything from soft tops for beginners to performance boards for people who casually use words like “cutback.”

  • A Lesson: Even if you’re not new to surfing, a lesson can save you from some truly spectacular wipeouts. Plus, it’s nice to have someone yell “You’ve got this!” from the water.

  • Sunscreen: Reef-safe only. Apply liberally. Repeat.

Pro Tips for Surfing Waikiki

  1. Start Early: Sunrise is when the waves are best, the crowds are smallest, and the ocean feels like it’s all yours.

  2. Respect the Locals: Some surfers have been surfing these waves forever. Follow the rules, and they’ll welcome you with open arms.

  3. Stay Hydrated: Paddling is basically a full-body workout. Water is your new best friend.

  4. Smile: Even when you wipe out. Especially when you wipe out.

Waikiki Surfing and Beach Rentals

Rent what you need for your Waikiki surf adventure from Big Wave Dave Surf Shop (and save yourself some luggage fees and fear of breakage while you’re at it–who needs STRESS on vacation). In case you forgot any essential surf gear, they either rent it or sell it. Check out their fully stocked surf shop in the heart of Waikiki located across the street from the Duke Kahanamoku statue, behind the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

You will find over 100 surfboards to choose from, for all skill levels including an excellent selection of performance boards. Want even more good news? They can also deliver right to your hotel (you read that right!). Talk about making your Waikiki surf vacation a breeze.

We always recommend a lesson before any surf or stand up paddleboard rental to help you get acclimated to the local conditions. ESPECIALLY if this is your first time. You’ll get the hang of it much quicker with an expert on your side. When in doubt, ask for advice from the Big Wave Dave Staff.
